CORYMBIA

CORYMBIA

Fun loving forever home

When a much loved home was severely damaged in the Pasha Bulker storm, the family decided to rebuild and recapture its charm and connection to surrounding established gardens.

The initial challenge was to apply current construction standards to a steep site with abandoned mines below and lofty rainforest trees and lush gardens above.

Corymbia is a forever home. Its name refers to the hardwood forest dominated by Spotted Gums in which it is located.

On approach the playful character of the home is signalled; breezeblock arrays form tall, linear blade-like columns repeating the delight and monumentality of the internal stairwell wall.

The home is a celebration of its environment. The dining room has a glazed double height wall engaging with the explosion of colours in the garden, and from here the space flows directly through to the living room and kitchen & the extensive deck with distant ocean views beyond.

Places of tranquility abound in this home. Bedroom window seats are repeated and make intimate connections with the treetops as well as delightfully providing views through and beyond each other.  Bedroom privacy is flexible as walls open up through screens and timber louvres to connect with the lightfilled living areas and activity.

The home enjoys distance ocean views but it is the intimate connection with the beloved garden that makes it a wondrous place to be in.

Outcome

• Sunlight filters into the home perched within the canopy of the landscape
• Colours, textures, playful gestures, this extraordinary house is very much a home.
