Mornington Peninsula House

Modernist palette

The home literally lifts its inhabitants into a realm of light, air and order. It provides a retreat from the surrounding windblown landscape and the weather extremes of the southern ocean.

The realisation of a life long dream for a couple who had always wanted ocean views from their Flinder's holiday stronghold on the Mornington Peninsula. As home to local and world renown artist, Hugh Evans, it also had to provide a highly productive studio.

The language of this architecture was realised through conversations with Hugh and Liz. The spatial experience of this home is far greater than the sum of its parts. However its parts are essential to the final peice.

Modernist concepts of well known Architect's such as Le Corbusier and Australia's own Harry Seidler were referenced within the construction; clean lines, machined accuracy, ribbon windows that wrap around corners, floors raised on slim support columns, deep cantilevering protective eaves.

Hugh Gallery is located in Flinders. Hugh Evans' paintings are also far greater than the sum of their parts. They lift you from the everyday and make your entire self feel positive. It was extremely rewarding that this home, completed at the end of a long and complicated process, has this same quality..

Outcome

• Spaces provide a most extraordinary uplifting experience
• A simple sculptural expression in the landscape
• Inspirational creative environment
