Yellowbox

Yellowbox

Yellow Box is located in the countryside beyond the historic gold mining town of Sofala.

The remote and rugged land had no town water, no sewerage system, no electricity, no road access, severe soil erosion and substantial seasonal temperature changes.

The site sloped steeply to provide awe inspiring & expansive views to the south.
Building materials were selected for robustness as well as physical and tactile appeal.

Planning allowed for usable spaces to flow from one onto the next. Large, oversized doors enclosed the open fireplace living room to contain the heat in the chilly winters.

High level windows allowed northern light to infiltrate deep into the building in winter but not summer due to the eaves.

Summer heat rose to the vaulted ceiling where it was expelled & glazing on all four sides provided for cross ventilation, capturing the available cool summer breeze.

Windows wrapped around corners to expand the internal spaces and extend the view into the landscape.

Locally sourced large stone blocks were used to create an internal stone wall and fireplace which anchors the heart of the home to the land.

Anne and Tim were involved in every consideration and the Builder produced a building with functional, thoughtful detailing throughout.

An uncomplicated home that belongs in its valley. Yellow Box is a joy.

Outcome

• An uncomplicated home that belongs in its valley.
• Self sufficient, earthy, comfortable and beautiful.
