Flinders Keep

Flinders Keep

Creative modelling throughout the design stage resulted in individual rooms occupying different levels on the sloping site, all linked by a southern passage.

The curved southern wall evolved into strong straight sections of cavity block work that supported and defined each of these individual spaces. The curve was transferred to the interior plasterboard wall of the passageway, providing a strong contrast to the texture of the split faced block work expressed internally as well as externally. The texture of the block work also provided a robust and reassuring anchor to the home.

Transition spaces where the blockwork stepped, were brought alive by delicate floor to ceiling corner glazing providing glimpses of the garden.

Passive solar principles are embedded into the design, with extended northern eaves, insulated walls, floor and ceilings, and ample opportunities for cross ventilation. The blockwork was insulated in the cavity to reduce heat transfer and provide a stable internal temperature year round.

Shaping of spaces to adapt to changing needs as the project revealed itself resulted in a highly functional, exquisitely finished and serene place call home.

Outcome

• Embracing the North-orientated living spaces,
• Protecting the home from the harsh Bass Strait weather.
