Berowra House - 'Nunga Mai'

The Glorified Tin Shack'

Annie was clear from the outset that the design was to be a ‘glorified tin shack’ for her and Ron to call home.

The brief was to create a large interior space with views, views, views.

Jill visited several possible house sites with Annie and Ron, however the one they chose

ultimately chose them, and they were completely committed to creating their unique home.

The artist studio at the entry level provides an exclusive, inspiring & creative space, bypassed by the meandering stair that leads to main living level.

The panoramic views available from the dominant kitchen, living and dining room space are accentuated by wrap around side and rear windows that create an encompassing space linking the sandstone rockface at the rear of the house with the dominant riverscape framed by bushland to the front.

Personal spaces such as a bathing room and window seat extend the main bedroom into a substantial and centred space in its own right. All with those views at the core of the original concept.

Once built, Annie & Ron sought advice from a Guring-gai Aboriginal elder and named their home Nunga Mai meaning gift.

Outcome

• Majestic open plan
• Intimate internal spaces
• Expansive views
